The Legacy of Jovenel Moïse: Challenging Misconceptions and Standing Up to Oligarchs.
Many people want to believe that Reginald Boulos and Dimitri Vorbe were the only opponents Jovenel Moïse faced. We will challenge anyone who spreads this misconception.
Let's take a closer look at the actions of our late president that ruffled many feathers in the private sector and shook things up:
1) The 4G internet license: Some powerful actors were pushing the State to sign a contract for 10 million dollars. When they saw that President Jovenel wasn't going along with it, they resorted to intimidation to try to force him out of office. However, the president held firm, and as a result, the State signed a contract worth 407 million U.S. dollars. Were Boulos and Dimitri the only ones who needed that 4G license for 10 million?
2) Upon taking office, Jovenel discovered that former President Jocelerme Privert had signed four high-value contracts totaling 4.8 billion dollars with major oligarchs. Jovenel canceled all of them. Were these contracts Boulos and Dimitri's?
3) Jovenel ordered the State to stop purchasing bitumen (asphalt) from local suppliers due to cheaper alternatives abroad. This change cut out around 2 million dollars in monthly profits that specific individuals were pocketing. Was this about Boulos and Dimitri?
4) Jovenel pushed the State to establish its asphalt plant and invest in equipment to strengthen the Ministry of Public Works. His goal was to build roads across the country more cost-effectively, rather than paying 1.5 million dollars per kilometer to private contractors. Were road projects tied to Boulos and Dimitri?
5) Annually, the State had been spending 240 million dollars to buy blackout electricity from private firms. Jovenel aimed to eliminate this drain and sought to provide the entire nation with continuous, 24/7 electricity. Unfortunately, for four years, various groups resisted his efforts. This is when Jovenel's resolve was tested, affecting Dimitri's interests directly.
6) Jovenel confronted a group of Catholic priests who were using the State's privileges to smuggle goods under their names for the private sector. He put a stop to this!
7) He was determined to interconnect Haitian customs with global customs networks so that when companies declared large shipments in other countries, Haitian customs would be alerted. This initiative threatened many companies engaging in customs fraud.
8) In 2020, Jovenel established a commission to investigate the gas industry, which revealed that gas companies were raking in over 300 million dollars annually from the masses. Jovenel halted these practices. Note: Five major barons dominate the gas sector in Haiti.
9) Jovenel advocated for the creation of the National Bank for Agricultural Development (BNDA), intending to support agriculture by lending to farmers at low interest rates to enhance national production. This project not only faced opposition from local elites but also caught the attention of the international community in a positive light.
10) 24 wealthy individuals owed APN (National Port Authority) 19 million dollars since 2001 without repayment. In February 2021, Jovenel demanded payment within 15 days.
11) Jovenel was in a battle to liberate the State from oligarchic control. To do this, he proposed constitutional reforms because reforming the system meant addressing the country's core laws. This threatened the interests of those who benefited from the old constitution.
12) Jovenel also fought against corruption, particularly in the realm of overinvoicing. For instance, when in need of hiring six agricultural tractors for the farmers of Artibonite, he discovered that while a prominent baron quoted each tractor at 300 thousand dollars, the same machines cost only 46 thousand dollars in the Dominican Republic.
13) Jovenel was dedicated to securing water, roads, and 24/7 electricity for the country to enhance national production. He sought to liberate the State from corrupt oligarchs. Ultimately, he paid the ultimate price for these battles.
The fight must continue.
